Selecting heating and cooling appliances

Selecting heating and cooling appliances

We have previously discussed how positioning your home on the land and choosing an energy efficient design and building shell will help lower energy consumption. Selecting energy efficient cooling appliances is also of great importance. When selecting cooling appliances look for products with a high energy star rating. This is especially important in Darwin as energy consumption on space cooling is typically 30 per cent of the energy bill. Products with a higher star rating use less energy and produce fewer carbon emissions per unit of cool produced, which lowers running costs and reduces your energy bill. The star rating system allocates between one and six stars to appliances – you may want to consider looking at appliances with a minimum of four stars and check whether higher star ratings are achievable. Remember that the higher the star rating, the lower the long-term running costs.

The Energy Rating scheme is a government sponsored system that allows easy comparison of the energy efficiency of most of your appliances – including the ability to search for appliances across different suppliers.
