Selecting appliances

Appliances, such as your refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher, account for 48 per cent of total energy use in the average Darwin home. Traditionally, the refrigerator has been by far the largest consumer of energy. However, it may surprise you to know that televisions, computers and other home entertainment equipment are forecast to far exceed energy consumption from all other household appliances over the next twenty years.

Remember also that an energy efficient appliance that is much larger than you really need will still consume considerable energy. Maybe it is worth considering smaller appliances, or fewer appliances such as large screen televisions, to keep your overall energy consumption and size of your energy bill as low as possible.

The Commonwealth government has put in place an Australian star rating scheme to allow you to compare a wide range of products for energy efficiency.

The government sponsored Energy Rating scheme is a useful tool to better understand ratings and find appliances with the highest star ratings. For more information and to compare products go to www.energyrating.gov.au/productmenu.html.
